Anna Dobbs from the Society of St. Andrew visited with Union Grove during our 5th Sunday congregational dinner on Jan. 29, 2012. Here is Anna with Timmy, a member of our congregation. Anna gave us some startling figures about hunger and poverty in North Carolina, as well as some surprising stories about the abundance of fresh food this country produces and doesn't use. Union Grove plans to go gleaning soon with the Society.

Indoor Yard Sale

Union Grove will hold an indoor yard sale on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. Complimentary coffee will be available. All proceeds will benefit Society of St. Andrew (gleaning organization).

Saturday, Dec. 24: candlelight worship service is at 5 p.m. at ROUGEMONT UMC, corner of Hwy. 501 North and Red Mountain Road, at the stoplight in Rougemont

Sunday, Dec. 25: Christmas Day worship is at 11 a.m. at NEW BETHEL UMC, corner of Hwy. 57 and New Bethel Church Road, just west of the Orange County Speedway, in Rougemont.

ALL ARE INVITED!!!

There will be no worship services at Union Grove or Rougemont on Christmas Day.

Moravian Love Feast

Union Grove held our annual Moravian Love Feast on Sunday, Dec. 4, at 5 p.m. It was a celebration of seasonal music plus sharing a wondrous love feast of rolls and sweet coffee. In this photo, Pastor Cheryl and ministerial intern Laura-Allen Kerlin sing a duet, "Were You There on that Christmas Night?" Many thanks to our musicians, especially pianist Yvonne McFarland, our "dieners" (servers), and Tivey Dobbs, who coordinated the service. It was full of warmth, love, and light!

Brunswick Stew

The Rougemont Charge's new ministerial intern for the academic year is Laura-Allen Kerlin, who begins her field education placement with us on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011. Laura-Allen is from Louisiana, has a degree from Clemson, and is in her second year of Duke Divinity School. She plans to be a pastor when she graduates.

Union Grove will hold a special song service on Sunday, Sept. 4, at 5 p.m. We will enjoy hearing "the old, old story" of God's salvation through Jesus Christ, told through scripture, music, and holy Communion (no sermon). Goodbye, Megan

Sunday, Aug. 28, was our last Sunday with Megan Pardue, and we bid her and Keith a fond farewell. Megan, a student at Duke Divinity School, just completed her summer field education placement with the Rougemont Charge. She taught Sunday school at Union Grove, and we will miss her! Union Grove UMC held a Christmas Moravian love feast on Sunday, Dec. 4, at 5:30 p.m. The sanctuary was packed, the music was fantastic, and the food was delicious. God's Spirit filled the church! Thank you to all who helped make it a warm and wonderful evening.

Scott's Last Sunday!

This Sunday, July 25, will be Scott Shaffer's last Sunday with us. We will have a charge-wide covered-dish lunch at noon at New Bethel UMC in Rougemont to honor Scott and Shannon, and also Stephen and Stephanie Shytle (Stephen's last Sunday will be Aug. 1).

We have had a fantastic summer with our Duke Divinity ministerial interns! We wish them all the best as they continue their education at Duke. Plus, we hope to see them again soon!

Worship on July 25 at Union Grove will be at 5:30 p.m., and Scott will preach. We also will celebrate Holy Communion. All are welcome -- invite a friend!

The Rougemont Charge bids farewell and God bless to Dewey and Lynne Williams. Dewey has been our Duke Divinity ministerial intern for the past year; he has blessed us with his sweet presence and stellar preaching, and he and Lynne have blessed us with their singing (and Lynne's piano playing). The Rougemont Charge honored them at a luncheon April 25 at New Bethel UMC. Dewey departs for his summer field education placement in South Africa on May 24. He will keep us updated on his adventures, which will be posted right here.

* Friday, April 2, 7 p.m.: A Charge-wide showing of the acclaimed movie, "The Passion of the Christ" will be held at New Bethel UMC.

Good bye, Branson

Union Grove mourns the passing of Branson Crabtree on Feb. 4. Branson, who lived in the house next door to the church, was a charter member of Union Grove and a saint of the church for more than eighty years. His funeral is Monday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m. at Howerton Bryan Funeral Chapel in Durham, with visitation at 12:30 p.m.

Lenten Bible Study

A Lenten Bible study with the Rougemont Charge will be offered Saturday mornings from 10 to 11 a.m., at Union Grove UMC, beginning Saturday, Feb. 20 and ending Saturday, March 27. We will study Paul's letter to the Philippians, along with scripture and hymns about Christ's passion. Everyone is invited; you also are welcome to invite your friends and family. A sower went out to sow his seed... - Luke 8:5

Spring is right around the corner, a time when we think about sowing seeds. We also sow seeds of faith in our everyday lives - Jesus tells a parable about a sower who went out to sow the Word of God, and he scattered seed wherever he went. The sower was not discerning about where he threw seeds - the parable tells us that some seeds landed on the path, some in the rocks and thorns, and some on fertile soil. The sower was less concerned about the condition of the soil than he was in sowing seeds. We, too, are to scatter the seeds of our faith abundantly, randomly, hopefully, and exuberantly. We sow seeds knowing that only God knows the condition of the soil (people's hearts), and only God can make the seeds germinate and grow.

How do we sow seeds of faith? Here are a few examples:

* "Would you like to come to church with me this Sunday? I'd be happy to pick you up and bring you so you don't have to walk in alone."

* "Lord knows I don't have all the answers, but we sure do ask some good questions in church. In fact, the pastor tries to answer our questions after the sermon! Why don't you come and see for yourself?"

* "I'm so sorry to hear about your troubles. Would you mind if I included you in my daily prayers?"

* "You've been on my mind and in my prayers lately. I'd like to share a bit of Scripture that has comforted me when I've gone through hard times."

* "I don't know how I would have gotten through that difficult time in my life if it were not for God and my church family. If you feel like you could use a loving, supportive family right now, I hope you won't mind if I invite you to come to church with me."

I'm sure you can think of many more. How many people will God send across your path this week, with whom He wants you to share your faith? Sow some seeds! See you in church! Blessings, Pastor Cheryl
